1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS station wagon
Pictures/owned by Lyle Simons

This is a very rare wagon...1973 was the last time the SS package (option Z15) appeared on a Chevelle.  It was only offered on the Malibu two-door coupe and (surprise!) the station wagon (the only year you could get an SS station wagon).  The 350 V8 (in 2- or 4-V configuration) was the standard SS engine, but this wagon came with the optional 454, which was rated at 245 net horsepower.

The SS option cost $243, and was sold on 28,647 Chevelles.   The 454 option cost another $235, and was only sold on around 2,500 of those cars.   SS identification was found on the grille, front fenders, liftgate, steering wheel, and door panels on the interior.  The SS package consisted of a blacked-out grille, dual sport mirrors, color-keyed lower body striping, black-rimmed instrument dials, front/rear stabilizer bars, rally wheels, and G70x14 raised letter tires.

More information on the '73 SS cars can be found in the October, 1998 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine, on pages 22-25.

More information from Tim: "This one has the third seat, too. Easy way to tell with these - if it has the seat, it'll have a small vent window in the back. Six-passenger cars had one-piece quarter windows."
